Former Daily Star, Sun and Sunday Mail cartoonist Bill Caldwell – who is currently on a gap year – and pal Rowly Walker were awarded the John and Sally May Trophy for outstanding seamanship, after they sailed to the aid of a fellow competitor in the middle of the Atlantic in a two-handed yacht race.
Caldwell’s 34-foot boat Growler also won 3rd overall in class in the 2,800-mile challenge run by the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club from Falmouth to the Azores and back.
He is now motorbiking through Spain and Morocco with his wife Sylvia.
Caldwell is pictured with Walker just after they crossed the finishing line off Black Rock, Falmouth.
