Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Boris Johnson records second meeting with Rupert Murdoch in two months

By William Turvill

London mayor Boris Johnson has now formally recorded two dinners with Rupert Murdoch this year.

According to his register of gifts and gratuities, Johnson met with Murdoch on 4 March – the evening before the media mogul is reported to have met with UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

Johnson also had a dinner with Murdoch on 22 January, which was reported to have taken place at Murdoch’s Mayfair home.

Asked for details of the latest meeting, a spokesperson for the mayor said: "All gifts and hospitality received by the Mayor over the value of £25 are registered in line with GLA policy under the Mayor's Gifts and Hospitality declarations."

Boris Johnson’s gifts and hospitality register has previously disclosed a two-day holiday with Independent owner Evgeny Lebedev (it was “purely personal” apparently), a dinner with Rebekah Brooks in 2009 and in November 2008 the gift of an electric toaster from then Metro managing director Steve Auckland.
