Betting paper on cards

By Press Gazette

The word in racing circles is that Sport First publisher Keith Young may return to Saturday preview publishing with a paper carrying more greyhound and horseracing betting information.

Young, right, has apparently been approached from two quarters representing, on the one hand, greyhound racing interests and on the other, bookmakers, who would appreciate seeing another publication in the field now monopolised by the Racing Post.

He is said to be considering both propositions and mulling over launching a paper chronicling events in the dog and horseracing calendars in time for the start of the turf flat racing season at the end of March. Revenue from betting advertising and the advantage of bookmakers selling his paper might be powerful persuaders.

Young refused to comment but said drily: “Nature abhors a vacuum – and a monopoly.”
