BBC journalists first on scene of Kenyan violence

By colinc

BBC journalists were the first from an international broadcaster to reach Eldoret in Kenya, where post election violence erupted in the new year, according to BBC in-house magazine Ariel.

BBC correspondent Karen Allen and producer Susanna Nicol reported from the town where more than 30 people were burned to death after taking refuge in a church.

Ariel also reported difficulties for BBC staff working in Pakistan, where violence has escalated since the murder of Benazir Bhutto. Journalists faced transport problems and blackouts. BBC Islamabad correspondent Barbara Plett suffered extensive bruising when she fell six feet into an empty hotel pool under the cover of darkness but recovered in time to carry on broadcasting next day.
